Frequently Asked Questions about LASIK
How long is the LASIK procedure?
The procedure is remarkably fast — less than 3 to 5 minutes per eye.
Is laser eye surgery painful?
The procedure is painless. During the procedure, the eye is anesthetized
with eye drops. Needles are not used. You may feel a little pressure but this
is relatively minor.
How long will it take my eyes to heal?
The front surface of the eye takes 24 to 72 hours to heal. Patients usually
feel fine by the next morning and are able to return to work.
Can I have LASIK on both eyes at the same time?
Absolutely. Most patients find it more convenient to have both eyes
treated at the same time.
Will my vision remain stable long after the procedure?
Yes, laser vision correction is permanent, which is why it is so important
to choose your surgeon wisely.
Will I need reading glasses?
The LASIK procedure will not hasten the need for reading glasses.
However, presbyopia, the normal weakening of the focusing muscles of
the eye, usually starts at the age of 44. Most normally sighted patients
require readers in their mid-forties.
Will my insurance cover LASIK surgery?
LASIK is an elective procedure, which means that the surgery is optional.
As a result, most insurance companies will not cover the costs. Check with
your doctor to see if financing is available.
